An Overview of Spring Onion

Allium is a genus of plants that contains various varieties of scallions. Scallions have a milder taste than most onions, and they are closely related to garlic, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onions. The spring onion, also known as green onion, is really a very young onion that is harvested before the bulb has had a chance to swell.

More You Will Love:

  • You can eat either the long, slender green tops or the small white bulbs raw or cooked
  • Dark Onion is excellent with salads of shredded vegetables or fish dishes
  • Serve with fresh chutneys and raitas, partly for their flavour
  • Growing dark onions is super easy even indoors

Benefits of Spring Onion Seeds

Antioxidants and compounds in dark onions help reduce inflammation, triglyceride levels, and cholesterol levels. These are all factors that may lower heart disease risk. They may also help lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots because of their potent anti-inflammatory properties.

How to sow and care for Spring Onion Seeds

Ten weeks before your local last frost date, start the onion seeds indoors and transplant them outside. The seeds should be planted a quarter-inch deep. Ideally, it should be placed in a sunny and fertile area with good drainage and fertile soil.

When planted indoors, germination takes about four to ten days. It is best to transplant the plants outside a few days before the last frost. Plant seedlings at least six inches apart whenever you transplant them.

Make sure your onions are planted in an area with good drainage. To plant onion seedlings, choose an area of your garden that has the least amount of weeds; onion seedlings are small and can't compete with weeds. Make a furrow in your soil that is at least four inches deep before the last frost.

Before planting, water this furrow to prepare your seedlings for transplanting. An onion's growth can be affected by bacterial, fungal, and viral diseases.
