Overview of Greek Oregano

Oregano is a species of flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family. Although native to the Mediterranean region, it has become widespread throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere. Ordinarily, oregano grows up to 80cm high and spreads 30cm wide. There is no doubt it is the best tasting of all oregano types.

More to love in Greek Oregano:

  • The herb grows naturally on stony, dry grounds
  • They are usually white, but they can also be pink
  • Fresh oregano is an excellent antibacterial
  • Super easy to grow from the seeds indoors, outdoors

Benefits of Greek Oregano

There are phytonutrients in fresh oregano greek that are known to fight infections like staph. In addition to being rich in antioxidants that prevent cell damage, it is also an excellent source of fibre, vitamin K, manganese, iron, vitamin E, tryptophan, and calcium. All in all, this herb should be in every gardener's arsenal.

How to Sow and Care for Greek Oregano Seeds

The best time to sow seeds is between May and September, but they can be grown year-round. Oregano grows best in loose, well-draining soil. Oregano grows best in soils with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. The plant can grow in well-drained soils. The best time to start sowing oregano indoors is four weeks before the average last frost.

Oregano seeds germinate best when sown at 70°F; sowing the seed at this temperature will maximize growth. Germination occurs most quickly when seeds are in the light and covered with cheesecloth. Plant out seedlings after the last frost. You can plant oregano seeds in your garden at the end of spring when the last frost usually occurs.

Plants of the Oregano family require water to thrive. Keep the oregano hydrated by giving it regularly, even watering. Once established, only occasional watering is necessary. The flavour of oregano will suffer from moist soil. During the growing season, you can spray oregano with compost tea or liquid seaweed extract 2 to 3 times.

During hot weather, mulch oregano roots with old compost to keep them cool. Oregano needs to be kept pinched back to induce bushy growth and for best flavour and aroma; flowering will result in a loss of leaf flavour. Pruning your plants almost to ground level during the summer will stimulate new growth.
