Overview of Purple Turnip

The purple turnip tops are known as the root tubers of the plant. As its name suggests, the exposed part of the turnip above the soil line will be a bright purple, while the underground part will be white. The turnips have smooth skin and a diameter of about 7 to 10 centimetres when harvested. The part of the tuber that grows below ground is white, while the part of the tuber that sticks out of the ground is purple.

More to love in Purple Turnip :

  • Unlike many varieties of turnips, purple tops grow larger
  • They can be stored successfully in a cool, moist location
  • To make your own coleslaw, peel and julienne the turnips
  • It produces greens, which are also edible

Benefits of Purple Turnip

You can bake or boil Purple Top Turnips in stews, soups, or stir-fries, or lightly steam them with butter, salt, or lemon juice for flavouring. The matchstick garnish of turmeric tastes great. As well as fibre and vitamins A, C, D, E, B1, B3, B5, B6, B2, and folate (one of the B vitamins), turnips contain minerals such as manganese, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, and copper. Furthermore, they contain phosphorus, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein.

How to sow and care for Purple Turnip Seeds

Add compost to garden soil. Our goal is to create moderately fertile conditions in an area that receives full sun to partial shade. With your fingers, you can dig shallow trenches a few inches deep. Space the trenches ten to twenty-five inches apart. Six to eight weeks before the last frost, sow Purple Top Turnip seeds about an inch apart in the trenches, and cover lightly with soil. They will be harvested in the late spring. Temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius during the day are ideal for the growth of purple top and other turnip varieties. Sow the turnip seeds in late summer for a harvest in the fall after high temperatures have passed. For a continuous yield, sow them every two weeks during the middle of the summer in regions with cool summers.

Once they are a few inches tall, simply thin the turnip sprouts four to six inches apart, keeping the toughest ones. Plants with purple tops should be mulched with straw to protect the tops of the tubers from the harsh sun. Make sure that the soil is kept moist by watering regularly. When the soil is continuously moist, the tubers grow the fastest and tenderly. Keep the soil moist. Approximately halfway through the growing season, side dresses the purple tops with compost by spreading it between the rows. Regularly weed the turnip beds. Infestation of pests can be encouraged by the roots of weeds.
