An Overview of Pomegranate

Pomegranate is an ancient fruit that originated in Persia, present-day Iran. The inside of the pomegranate consists of a soft, white mesoderm that surrounds the small seeds. The seeds, also known as arils, are about the size of a corn kernel and contain bright red water. They are the only edible part of the fruit, with each pomegranate containing hundreds of seeds.

More to love in Pomegranate :

  • Eating pomegranates regularly improves gut health
  • Eating this fruit also prevents intestinal diseases
  • The word pomegranate actually means an apple with many seeds
  • These fruits are classified as a super fruit

Benefits of Pomegranate

Eating whole pomegranate can have anti-inflammatory effects and can protect the human body from various diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. They are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium, as well as several other essential nutrients. In fact, eating one pomegranate gives you about 28 mg of vitamin C or almost 50% of the recommended daily intake (DRI).

How to sow and care for Pomegranate

It is best to start sowing seeds indoors during this time, as the seedlings will be ready to go outdoors in early spring. You can either plant it in a pot or sow it directly outdoors. To plant seeds in a pot, simply fill a 4- to 6-inch pot with a mixture of two parts soil and one part coarse silica sand. In case you add sand it will improve drainage, which is important for this plant, as soggy soil can lead to root rot. Press one seed per pot about 1/4 inch deep into the soil and cover.

In case you have a biodegradable pot you can use that, this is the best option as you won't need to disturb the roots when growing the plants into their permanent home. Water is just enough to moisten the soil. Keep the soil moist but not wet until the seedlings have sprouted. Seeds need warm temperatures of 75-85°F to germinate. Gradually increase the time and duration of direct sunlight exposure.
