An Overview of Mix Flower Cosmos

Known as the Mexican aster or garden cosmos, Cosmos bipinnatus is a medium-sized flowering herbaceous plant of the daisy family Asteraceae that grows in the Americas. A variety of cultivars and varieties of the species are popular ornamental plants in temperate climate gardens.

What is more to love:

  • From seed, Cosmos are easy to grow
  • They are half-hardy annuals with daisy-like flowers
  • They bloom from midsummer to the first frost
  • They're great for filling gaps in summer borders
  • They look great in meadow planting schemes
  • They can even be used in containers to display

Benefits of Mix Flower Cosmos

Maintaining a sufficient number of pollinator insects in your garden helps you manage pests and pollinate your plants. Cosmos flowers pollinate and feed pest insects as well as attract beneficial insects like lacewings, parasitic wasps, tachinid flies, and hoverflies.

There are two species of Cosmos, the most common of which is Cosmos bipinnatus, which is not edible. Neither children nor pets can be hurt by it because it doesn't have any harmful properties.

How to sow and care for Mix Flower Cosmos Seeds

Cosmos generally prefer full sun, except in very hot weather, when part shade is tolerated. Before planting, remove weeds from the soil. However, too much moisture can make the soil prone to disease. Soils prefer dry, arid environments over wet ones. Fertilize with nitrogen-free fertilizers to encourage foliage to grow more quickly than flower blossoms.

After the danger of frost is past, scatter seeds can be planted in the spring since sprouts will grow quickly. Shorter varieties should be planted ten to twelve inches apart, while taller varieties should be planted one to two feet apart. You may want to stake Cosmos when they grow too tall and gangly.

Branches of the stems of Cosmos are hollow and tubular. After the first bloom, the flowers should be cut back to encourage continued growth. Rather than removing blossoms already established on your Cosmos, trim them rather than removing them altogether.

Be sure to keep watering until new blossoms form. Keep Cosmos upright by planting them together. Stabilize taller varieties if there is a lot of wind. Despite needing moisture when they are young, mature plants can adapt to drier conditions and need less water.
