Overview of Herb Rosemary

Scientifically known as Salvia Rosmarinus, it is commonly known as rosemary, is a shrub with fragrant, evergreen, needle-like leaves and flowers that range from white to pink, purple or blue, occurring in the Mediterranean region. The scientific name Rosmarinus officinalis, now synonymized, was used until 2017. In a kitchen, herbs like basil, rosemary, and parsley are often found in the spice rack, but they're actually aromatic leaves. Because they are made from crushed portions of plants that are particularly rich in essential oils, spices tend to have a stronger flavour than herbs.

More to love in Herb Rosemary:

  • Rosemary is a herb that has many health benefits
  • Rosemary is capable of managing high blood sugar in people who are diabetic
  • Mid-winter is the best time to start the seeds
  • The seeds should be planted in a light layer of soil

Benefits of Herb Rosemary

Rosemary tea can help lower blood sugar levels. The research on rosemary tea is lacking, but Rosemary indicates that carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid can affect blood sugar levels similar to insulin. These compounds have been shown in several studies to lower blood sugar levels by increasing glucose absorption by muscle cells. Researchers found that oral Rosemary that is taken twice daily for one month significantly reduced anxiety levels and improved sleep and memory in college students.

How to sow and care for Herb Rosemary Seeds

Rosemary seeds germinate slowly, and seedlings grow at a slow pace. Mid-spring is the best time to transplant seedlings outside, but they need to be started within 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Seed starters should be filled with soilless potting mix. The rosemary seeds do better in loose, light potting mixes that do not contain soil than other plants that grow in rocky or sandy soil. Three to four seeds should be placed in each cell. Once the seedlings reach the size of pots, they can be transplanted outside. Spread a small amount of regular potting soil over the entire surface of the growing medium to cover the seeds.

After the last anticipated frost, plant the seeds permanently after they have germinated. An ideal place for them would be in full sun, with fertile soil that is not too wet. It is possible to increase the germination rate of 30cm Rosemary by planting multiple seeds in each cell. The seeds should not be pressed into the potting medium. They should be placed on top. Choose a location with plenty of sunlight. Rosemary needs a lot of direct sunlight in order to thrive. The plant should be placed in an area that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day.
