Overview of Borage Officinalis

The Borage plant, also known as starflower, is a member of the Boraginaceae family of flowering plants. The plant originated in the Mediterranean region and has been naturalized in a number of other places. Borage seeds should be planted every four weeks for the flower to grow. They can be picked whenever you want as long as they are planted regularly. As a result of the process of harvesting the leaves, they retain more of their unique flavour, so they make better food than dried leaves.

More to love in Borage:

  • Their blooms can produce great honey
  • There are medicinal properties in all parts of the borage plant
  • Borage leaves can be used as a poultice to relieve insect bites and stings
  • Reduce swelling and bruising, as well as clear up boils and rashes

Benefits of Borage

Most people use flowers, but the leaves and oil from the seeds can be used to make herbal remedies. Borage oil is a popular herbal supplement made from seeds, and it contains omega fatty acids derived from plants. One cup of boiling water should be poured over a one-quarter cup of bruised fresh leaves when making an infusion. Let steep for five minutes and strain.

How to sow and Care for Borage  Seeds

Borage is a plant that is easy to grow. If you plan to plant indoors, begin planting three to four weeks before the last frost date or start them outdoors after the later frost date. You can plant borage successionally all summer long as long as you have eight weeks before the first frost. In hot weather, the plants may bolt and go to seed more quickly. Borage seeds can either be scattered on top of the soil, or sown in every 12 inches by poking a hole. A seedling can be started indoors by placing one or two seeds in each cell and covering them with soil. Make sure you water the seeds gently so as not to disturb them.

Until it is established, borage needs regular watering. After it is established, soil watering becomes more challenging. Borage doesn't require nutrients; fertile soil prevents blooming. Use compost tea and dilute fish emulsion solutions to boost flowering plants. Plants should be pruned when they reach 6 inches in height if you want them to grow bushy. The borage leaves should be cut in half at about midsummer to promote new, tender leaves. Borage will die back if temperatures drop below freezing. Borage can survive mild winters and bloom again the following year.
