Overview of Butterhead Lettuce

Iceberg lettuce heads grown from non-GMO seeds mature in 70 to 79 days. Crisphead lettuce like Iceberg lettuce can be grown in zones 4 through 9. The Iceberg lettuce has a mildly sweet taste. It contains about 16,000 seeds per ounce.

What You'll Love

  • Crisphead lettuce (also known as iceberg lettuce) is the only lettuce type that offers such a cool and delicious crunch.
  • You can mix it with salad mixes or use it to top sandwiches.
  • Round, compact heads with blanched centres and green outer leaves

Benefits of Use Butterhead Crisphead Lettuce

Regular consumption of lettuce can provide even more health benefits from a balanced diet. This leafy green has low-calorie content and a high nutritional value, making it an incredibly healthy staple. Unlike its cousin, kale, Romaine lettuce contains higher levels of folic acid, a water-soluble vitamin B that boosts male fertility.

How to Care & Sow Butterhead Lettuce

Direct seeding should be done early in the spring. As part of the previous fall's preparation, add manure or compost to the beds and rake smooth to leave a fine seedbed. For seeds to germinate, sow them shallowly and cover them with a thin layer of growing medium. Set seed three centimetres apart, one centimetre deep, in rows fifteen to thirty centimetres apart. After two or three true leaves have developed, thin plants to 12-inch spacing. Spread seeds over a patch instead of planting them in rows.

Plant seedlings should be hardened for three days before transplanting. Layout rows of crispheads 18 inches apart, separated by 12 inches. In cold weather, row covers protect plants from insects, and in warm weather, they shade crops. Lettuce grows with shallow roots. Moisten the soil so plants can grow continuously. Mulch the soil so it stays moist and prevents weeds from growing. Overwatering the soil is not a good idea.
