Overview of Boltardy Beetroot

Beta vulgaris, beet, is a herbaceous biennial (rarely perennial) that is grown as an annual today. One of the best-known and most popular varieties available, Beetroot 'Boltardy' produces deep red, globe-shaped roots with a superb sweet flavor and tender, ring-free flesh. This variety of beetroot is bolt-resistant, making it ideal for early sowing.

More to love in Boltardy Beetroot:

  • Growing beetroot is easy, both outside and indoors
  • Usually, germination takes between 12 and 24 days
  • Most globe varieties are ready to harvest in 8-10 weeks
  • Younger roots are more tender

Benefits of Boltardy Beetroot

Beetroots contain important nutrients such as fiber, folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C. Research shows that beetroots and beetroot juice are associated with a wide range of health benefits, including improved blood flow, lowered blood pressure, and increased exercise performance.

How to sow and care for Boltardy Beetroot

Seeds should be presoaked in warm water for one hour before sowing to accelerate germination. Sow beetroot seeds outdoors between mid-April and late June in a shallow drill 1cm deep. Separate seeds 10cm apart, and space rows 30cm apart. Keep the area clean of weeds and water regularly. Beetroot seeds can be sown indoors from March to July in a weed-free, sunny location in fertile, light, well-drained soil. Beetroot seeds should be sown thinly at a depth of 1 cm and 30 cm apart in shallow drills. Wait patiently for the next step. Thinning out the seedlings within each row to 5 - 7cm apart when they are large enough to handle.

Water the beets frequently once they germinate. Doing so reduces the risk of the roots becoming woody or splitting. Be careful not to damage the beetroot swelling as you chop around the plants to keep the row weed-free. Germination takes place between 8 and 25 degrees Celsius. Yay! The time has come. When harvesting beetroot, grasp the foliage firmly to meet the root top and pull. Too early is more reasonable than too late when harvesting beetroot. Gather roots that are the size of a cricket ball or smaller and store only those that are not damaged.
