An Overview of Yellow Swiss Chard

Yellow Swiss chard, a leafy green vegetable, comes in two main varieties: Flavescens and Cicala. Flavescens cultivars boast large leaf stalks, while Cicala cultivars resemble spinach beets. The tender leaves of this vibrant chard are perfect for cooking, with a slightly bitter taste when eaten raw. Explore the versatility of Yellow Swiss Chard as it adds a unique flavour to your culinary creations.

What You'll Love

  • After cooking, the bitterness dissipates, leaving a mild, sweet taste similar to spinach
  • They are edible raw as a salad green or cooked
  • Swiss chard is a great source of vitamin C, magnesium, and vitamin A

Benefits of F1 Yellow Swiss Chard

This vegetable is commonly steamed or sauteed and can be used to make soups, stews, casseroles, frittatas, and quiches. Although chard always has green leaves, the stalks can vary in colour. The Swiss chard also contains beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which are antioxidants. Many organs, including the heart, lungs, and kidneys, require vitamin A for normal development and maintenance.

How to Care And Sow F1 Yellow Swiss Chard Seeds

Yellow Swiss chard seeds should be sown about a week after the last spring frost. Soil that has been enriched with compost should be planted one to two centimetres deep. Plants should be spaced 4-5" apart for harvesting the entire plant. Plants should be spaced 8-10" apart for harvesting continuously the outer stalks. Every two weeks, plant seeds for a continuous summer crop. Germination should take place within a week. Since Swiss chard can withstand light frosts, it can also be planted in the fall.

Maintaining moisture in the soil and preventing weed growth is possible with mulch. Seedlings are sensitive to moisture at the beginning of their development. When a leaf reaches a height of between 6 and 8 inches, it can be harvested. To ensure continued growth, you can harvest the plant at the surface of the soil, leaving an inch of the stem attached. As well as harvesting the outer stalks, the inner stalks can be harvested.
