An Overview of Long Bottle Gourd

Calabash vines are also known as bottle gourds, white-flowered gourds, birdhouse gourds, New Guinea beans, and Tasmania beans. It can be harvested young to be consumed as a vegetable, or it can be harvested mature to be dried and used as a utensil, container, or musical instrument. A young bottle of gourd squash has a mild flavour and a firm texture similar to summer squash and cucumber.

More to love in Long Bottle Gourd:

  • Young bottle gourd seeds and skin are edible
  • Their tenderness declines as the plant mature
  • The best place for vines to grow is in full sunlight, protected from strong winds
  • Very beneficial for diabetic patients and easy to grow

Benefits of Long Gourd

Knowing a few tips can make preparing bottle gourds to use in your favourite recipes easy. Water-rich and high in calcium, vitamin C, and K, bottle gourds offer many health benefits. Bottle gourds help in maintaining a healthy heart and lower harmful cholesterol levels. The juice is also beneficial for diabetic patients, as it stabilizes blood sugar levels and maintains blood pressure.

How to sow and care for Long Gourd

Sow two seeds to a 10cm pot of general-purpose compost in an airing cupboard or propagator in May. Discard one seed if it does not germinate. In order to germinate, they need at least 18°C, but if the temperature rises, they emerge faster. They don't need too good soil to germinate. The less fertile soil on a plot is an asset since it limits the growth of vines that would otherwise reach over 4m in height.

After the danger of frost has passed, the plants must be started indoors and transplanted. Put the plants in a trench lined with half-decayed leaf mould or plenty of compost. To grow Bottle Gourds, you need a sturdy framework made from posts no thinner than 5 cm x 5 cm. Harden off the plants as soon as they have two or three true leaves, and plant them outside once the temperature outside is warm.

When the nights are cool, cover the young plants with horticultural fleece or even newspaper after transplanting. As soon as a plant is established, its roots are surprisingly resistant to cold. Watering is essential during dry weather since large leaf areas quickly become dehydrated.
