An Overview of Mandrake

Mandrake is mainly found on rocky slopes in the eastern Mediterranean. However, it is also found in North Africa, the Middle East, and even in the Himalayas. Due to their appearance and their human-like form, legends have sprung up around the roots throughout history. It blooms from a rosette of leaves, and its leaves are used in flight ointments, which are notorious witches' herbs.

More to love in Mandrake:

  • The herb is native to us, but it is seldom found and may only be found by actual herbalists
  • Historically, this herb was used to treat skin ulcers, abscesses, and general skin inflammations
  • You can grow mandrake outdoors or indoors without any issue
  • In spring, the Mandrake, Mandragora Autumnalis, is very spiritual

Benefits of Mandrake

The root of European mandrake is often used to treat stomach ulcers, colic, constipation, asthma, hay fever, convulsions, and rheumatism (arthritis-like pain). Besides triggering vomiting and sedation, it may also cause sleepiness, reduce pain, and enhance interest in sexual activity. As a natural analgesic for muscular, skeletal, arthritic, and rheumatic pain, the mandrake is used to treat inflammation.

How to sow and care for Mandrake

Mandrake prefers soil that is very light and porous, with a high proportion of sand or gravel. Successful propagation of mandrake seeds requires patience. Thus, a simulation of a cold period is required before mandrake seeds can germinate. Sand or sterile Cactus substrate kept in the refrigerator at 5 degrees Celsius should be used to prevent mould from growing on the seeds. You can direct seed it in the autumn.

In addition to direct sowing, it is also possible to plant seeds in pots in October. During the winter, it's best to keep them in an area that is protected from the elements. However, the substrate should not be allowed to dry out. The germination process usually takes 12 months.

Exposed the containers to fluorescent lights or grow lights after the seeds have germinated. Direct sunlight from a window should not be relied upon, since it can be too cool at night or too hot during the day. When the roots have grown large enough, mandrake roots should be able to survive outdoors.

Warning: Seeds are poisonous. Please keep children and animals safe!
