An Overview of Luffa Gourd

In the cucumber family, Luffa is a genus of tropical and subtropical vines. It is usually referred to as the fruits of Luffa aegyptiaca and Luffa acutangula when referred to in everyday non-technical usage. When cooked, Luffa Gourd has a mild and slightly sweet taste. Similar to summer squash or zucchini.

More to love in Luffa Gourd:

  • Long-term cooking of Luffa causes the flesh to break out due to its delicate texture
  • Luffa is taken by mouth for treating and preventing colds
  • Nasal swelling and sinus problems can also be treated with it

Benefits of Luffa Gourd

Luffa is mostly used to treat muscle and joint pain. And to used restore menstrual cycles in women. Because loofahs never completely dry out, they are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Loofahs can harbour fungal organisms that cause skin infections. That's why it's so important to use a loofah carefully, to replace it regularly, and to keep it clean.

How to sow and care for Luffa Gourd Seeds

Before planting, luffa gourd seeds should be soaked for 24 hours. The seeds should be sown along a fence in spring once the ground is warm enough to work and the threat of frost has passed. Many gardeners in northern parts of the country start seeds indoors a few weeks before planting, then transplant them outside once the weather warms and settles.

Luffa vines usually grow to a height of around 30 feet and need a strong trellis to support them. You should therefore plan to give them sturdy support, such as a fence or trellis if you intend to plant them. After you have hardened off your seedlings, plant them in an area that receives full sun. During the summer months, keep the Luffa moist. Feed your luffa plants a diluted liquid fertilizer or compost tea every four to six weeks.
