Benefits of White Mangold
It takes longer for the stems to soften than the leaves due to the high cellulose content. Leafy vegetables cook faster than stems. The chard is a good source of vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin A, and K. Beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and antioxidants are also present in Swiss chard. In addition to the heart, lungs, and kidneys, vitamin D is essential for many organs' normal development and maintenance.
How to sow and care for Mangold
Add compost to your soil before planting to ensure it is well-draining and rich. The planting site can be fertilized with a balanced fertilizer if your soil is deficient. The best time to plant chard seeds is two to three weeks before the last frost date in the spring. To speed up germination, seeds should be soaked in water for a day before planting. Seeds should be sown an inch deep, spaced two to six inches apart in rows, and rows should be about 18 inches apart. Chard seeds sprout in clusters of several seeds, so several seedlings emerge from a single planting hole.
Mangold thrives in full sunlight but can tolerate partial shade once they are about three to four inches tall. Thin the plants once they are about six to eight inches apart. Once they reach at least five inches tall, you can cut them with scissors and eat the young seedlings as a snack. You can replant them the following year. In this method, more mature leaves are harvested from each plant, allowing younger leaves to continue to grow for later harvests.
