The best way to grow calendula plants is to keep the soil moderately moist. Before rewatering the container, let it dry completely. Adding phosphorus to compost-containing soil may encourage new blooms, but it is not necessary to fertilize compost-containing soil. 

Plants should be kept partially shaded, not in full sun. The calendula flower prefers the cooler temperatures of spring and early fall to the heat of summer. The best place to grow them is in a vegetable garden.
